Perranporth triathlon trashed by bad weather

News is that the 2011 Perranporth triathlon was severely curtailed by bad weather, reducing the one time flagship event to a semi biathlon. One of the longest running events in the Cornwall calendar, it has grown with support from a club event attracting small numbers of people to one that attracts hundreds, based on its fearsome reputation for surf swims. Open water swim competence

Interesting story about triathlon, and the fact that a couple of swimmers in America died recently, because physically they're weren't up to the demands of a mass start in open water swims. Swimming in open water is much more demanding than pool swimming.

Now organisers are suggesting that entrants produce a certificate of open water swimming compentence before they enter an event. Perhaps clubs should make more effort to ensure their novice members are up to the challenge, before entering any event for the first time? More on this story here: Open Water swimming

Endless Summer Swim 2011

25th September 2011 - Endless Summer Swim

The ‘Gyllyngvase SLSC Endless Summer Swim’ is held on the final Sunday of the Lifeguard season in September, based at Gyllyngvase Beach. The course is roughly 800m’s (3 Buoys) for adults and 500m’s (1 Buoy) for nippers.

Each entrant is required to raise a minimum of £5 sponsorship to take part. It’s been a fantastic event for the past 3 years and the club looks forward to seeing you there in 2011!

Prizes: 1st placed adult, master (30+), junior (13-17) and nipper win a unique trophy and a one year membership to Gyllyngvase Surf Life Saving Club. Also prizes for the runners-up, the first Gylly SLSC members in each age catergory and the highest fund-raiser.

Swim for Logan 2011 update

The swim for Logan, is a charity swim in aid of Cystic Fibrosis. Taking place on August 7th, it involves a one mile swim for the slip next to the Jubillee bathing pool to the gear pole. So what is the latest news?

'Entries are trickling in up to about 2- officially and prob 40 unofficially - Lots of interest - piece in the Cornishman and also we were interviewed on the radio too. There are training/taster sessions at the Jubilee Pool on a tuesday night - hoping for a good turn out. Think we will have a barbeque and a cake stall and make a bit of an event out of it.'

Open water swim navigation

Most people complain about poor open water swim navigation (well I do anyway...) and the belief that if I'd swum in a more efficient way, straighter line or navigated a course more efficiently, I'd save myself a lot of time without swimming an extra stroke. I can also think of a couple of occasions that I felt that the route I'd taken was probably the best I could have done, helping to save time and energy and not adding an extra stroke. A guy on the swim smooth website has proven that often, swimmers navigate poorly in open water. This can often be due to sea swell reducing visibility, or currents pulling a swimmer off course, but these tend to affect seasoned sea swimmers (read surf swimmers) less. Check out this web page with GPS data showing the extra distance swum by a triathlete in real events, and the amount of time he wasted/added to his swim due to poor navigation.

Site update

Just fixed a bug with the editor which made writing a post on the forum like this a bit buggy. Seems OK now. Will be updating the site soon and then adding a new improvement. As you know, local businesses are the life blood of sport in Cornwall, and I'd like to think that tricornwall will reflect that this year, by creating a better platform for them, be they coaches, physios, sports or cycle shops and more. Stay tuned for further updates.

Mylor triathlon 2011

News is that there will be no triathlon held at Mylor in 2011, though the organisers are promising a return in 2012. Citing the reason as 'too busy' with domestic duties, it will no doubt be missed as it's a popular fixture on the tricornwall calendar. No further news on the Trident swim as yet. which they have also been involved with.

Adding new events for 2011

A different year, a different event. Adding your event is not simply a case of updating your 2010 event. Last years event is a different event, with different weather, expectations and opinions. 2011 is a new start, different t-shirts, competitors and hazards.

To add your 2011 event go to:

Explore > Events;
Select: Create New Event
Add your event details.

To help I've created a handy demo guide to the info required.

Members can then contact you via tricornwall mail, and add comments to your event listing.
