There is now an outline arrangement with Cornwall Council to take on management of the Bude sea pool from April on a long lease. This could permanently secure the future of the pool, but it does mean there is a massive amount of work to be done in the next few months.

Friends of Bude sea pool are urgently seeking extra hands to help with three key projects that must be fulfilled before the pool can open again:
*staff recruitment
*health & safety
*structural repairs
If you could spare some time and expertise in any of these areas, either short-term or on an ongoing basis, then that would be very much appreciated.

Contact friends of Bude sea poll or pop into the Seventh Wave Gallery on Belle Vue for a chat with Martyn Holehouse, FoBSP committee member.

If you’re not in a position to help at the moment, then perhaps you could help to spread the word – by posting this blog on social media sites, and so on. Just click the Facebook 'like' link or use the 'Socialize' links bottom right of this site.

Thanks for all your support,

Rowena Hoseason, on behalf of
Friends of Bude Sea Pool
www.BudeSeaPool.org
PO Box 66, Bude EX23 9ZX

Give someone a sea pool this Christmas?

The Friends of Bude sea pool have this message for you:

Since forming the Friends of Bude Sea Pool six months ago, we’ve made huge progress towards ke
...

The Friends of Bude sea pool have this message for you:

Since forming the Friends of Bude Sea Pool six months ago, we’ve made huge progress towards keeping the historic tidal swimming pool at Bude open. We’re very close to agreeing terms with Cornwall Council to take on management of the Pool from next April, and have secured pledges of grant funding and business sponsorship to help pay for it.

So we, the Friends of Bude Sea Pool, might be running the Sea Pool next summer – that’s a tall order for a very new charity. The FoBSP committee is working flat out to achieve this, because the alternative is that this beautiful, semi-natural swimming pool will be closed down and permanently demolished.

If we fail, then the Sea Pool will be knocked down. It’s that simple.

So although we have, with your help, already made massive progress, we need more help so we can finish the job. We have to meet the requirements of our insurer, and pay for public liability insurance. We have to recruit and train staff to run the Pool and lifeguard it at key times. We need to project-manage an extensive programme of repairs. We need to put in place revenue-generating schemes which will let the Pool pay for itself in the long run. And we have to do all this in our spare time, on a shoestring budget.

There’s an easy way for you to help: please encourage all your friends and family to JOIN the FoBSP or make a one-off DONATION to our funds.

Christmas is on the horizon: you could ask your friends to make a donation to FoBSP funds instead of buying a gift this year. Or you could give your friends their own FoBSP membership for Christmas. OK, so you can’t actually give your best friend a sea pool for Christmas – but this comes close!

The Endless Summer Swim hosted by Gyllyngvase Surf Life Saving and Triathlon club lived up to its name once more, as over 100 swimmers turned up to Gyllyngvase Beach for the 4th annual event. A moderate southerly breeze created slightly choppy conditions, but more importantly the sun was shining for the duration. At the start of the kids race, the tide was dropping to low, and there was a small wave rolling into the beach. 36 nippers from clubs across Cornwall lined up on the start, and when the horn sounded it was a fast dash along the beach into the cool waters of the Falmouth Bay. A few dolphin dives later and the nippers were swimming towards a 4 knot buoy, roughly 250 metres out to sea. A crowded finish line of cheering parents, family and friends were waiting for the swimmers to come to shore. Exiting the waves first was Gylly’s own Nicholas Laws, who completed the course in 7:39. After Nicholas were the first three girl nippers: Rosie Tonkin (8:06), Jodie Stephens (8:83) and Abbie Mundell (8:46). Second boy was Theo Flemming with a time of 9:05, closely followed by Thomas Barton, only 3 seconds behind (9:08).

The adult race started at noon, and the wind had picked up a notch as the competitors were lining up at the start. As well as the more competitive swimmers, there were also a large number of entrants just trying to complete the 800m (ish) course. 65 in total headed into the water at the start of the race. It wasn’t long until the leaders were turning the first buoy and there was a clear lead pack to be seen from the beach. As the leaders turned the third buoy and headed back to shore, they were being assisted by the swell and wind, some being able to bodysurf small waves to the sand.

The lead pack had split into two, and the first to emerge, with a large gap behind was Jacob Wood, who won the Junior Male race. George Hollis finished second Junior Male (12:32) and he was closely followed by last years winner Matthew Trewhella (12:41). Not far behind the boys was the first placed Junior Female, Kerry Bridgeman, who completed the swim in 13:15. The second Junior Female to sprint through the line was Courtney-Lee Reid (13:56) and third was Marisa Nichols (14:23). The winner of the Senior Female category was Catherine Haynes (16:34) and Rebecca Walters finished second in (17:31). The Senior Male age group was won by Jonathan Webb (15:36), with Simon Scholes (16:31) and Kieran Davies (16:44) second and third respectively. The final category was the masters (30+), and in the Female category Lois Leanard took the gold with a time of 18:49. Closely behind her was Julie Drage (19:08) and Catherine Ralph was third (20:13). For the Master Male age group the winner was Clive Boyes-Hunter (13:57), who finished 8th overall. Second place was Gareth Joseph (14:21) and third was Keith Hollis (14:33).

The safety cover stayed out in the water as the last swimmers came to shore, with Jeanette Bate exiting the water second from last. Jeanette did manage to win the “Golden Oldie’ award for being the eldest competitor to complete the swim as well as collecting the top Fund-raiser trophy. The final swimmer to stroll though the checkered flags was Jacqui Owen who received free swimming lessons courtesy of Neuvya Swim School. All swimmers were able to re-hydrate after completing the swim thanks to Pureblue Water.

A big thank you to the water cover, the ladies on the registration desk and all of the event sponsors for making it such a success (Sessions Surf Shop, Gylly Beach Cafe, Arvor Sea Kayaking, 2twenty2, Pureblue Water, ASP T-Shirt Printing, Neuvya Swim School, Seasalt, and the RNLI Lifeguards). The club raised almost £1000 on the day, which will be split between purchasing new life-saving and triathlon equipment as well as helping support Disaster Relief Charity ShelterBox.

Download the full results here >>

endless summer swim nipper results

endless summer swim junior senior masters results

Pics by Jacqui Owen and family.
