Nearwater St Mawes Triathlon – 26th September
On a day where St Mawes was soaked by sunshine the inaugural Nearwater triathlon lived up to all expectations.
Over 120 individuals and seven teams entered with spectacular performances across the categories:
special mention must be given to Kyle Kearey of Mounts Bay Harriers winning the event with a sub ten minute swim and a seventeen minute run, with the run only three minutes shy of the long standing village record. Celia Miall of West Country Triathletes came home fifth in the open event and as first female beating her nearest competitor in the woman’s event by some four minutes. Outstanding local performances were produced by Andrew Tillyard of St Just-in-Roseland, who not only produced the fastest cycle ride of the day but finished 7th overall. Richard Holbrook of St Mawes achieved the fourth fastest cycle time of the day and if it were not for his poor swimming leg (his technique is sometimes likened to that of a drowning man) his overall position of 24th would have been easily bettered.
With the much expected south westerly wind direction nonexistent contestants were greeted with the bay closer to a mill pond than the usual choppy conditions, thus providing great conditions and spectacular viewing for spectators; competitors were seen to respond to the 15 degree sea temperature with all wearing wetsuits, all that is barring a few locals more used to Cornish sea temperatures. Much to the relief of organisers Tim and Amelia Whitaker the cycle proceeded without incident whilst the run provided a stern test for all and one final chance for spectators to see the competitors in all their glory. Many of the competitors mentioned what a beautiful setting St Mawes was and how exceptionally friendly were the crowds and the marshalls.
